The event took place on 21/02/2025, at the University of Maiduguri’s Elkanami Hall.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Muktar Yakubu, the Provost of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele expressed gratitude to the University’s Language Center for its efforts towards development. He pledged full institutional support to encourage students to learn and preserve their mother's tongues, stating that language and culture are fundamental aspects of identity.
During the occasion, the Managing Director of UNIMAID Consult, Professor Adamu Dzivama, emphasized the importance of incorporating mother tongue languages in schools to enhance learning.
The Director of the UNIMAID Language Center, Prof. Muhamnad Sani Abdulmumin also addressed the necessity of teaching students in their native languages, highlighting its role in improving comprehension and academic performance.
In her remarks, UNICEF representative Dr. Rhoda Camble reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting elementary and basic schools in implementing mother tongue-based education. She also stressed the significance of promoting cultural diversity and reviving historical understanding.
The event featured award presentations, cultural dances, and showcases of various native languages, celebrating the richness of linguistic heritage.
