UNIMAID COMMEMORATES WORLD FAMILY HEALTH DOCTORS DAY

The Vice Chancellor of University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele has reaffirmed the University's commitment to its core mandate of fostering research, training, and community engagement in the health sector as it joins the global community in commemorating World Family Health Doctors Day.

He made this statement during a courtesy visit by the Head of the Department of Family Health Medicine at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Abiso and his team. The visit took place at the Annexe Chamber of the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building

Professor Mele stated that the University of Maiduguri and UMTH have been working collaboratively to address the unique health challenges faced by communities. He noted that both natural and man-made health problems, particularly those affecting mental health, continue to have profound effects on people’s lives and livelihoods.

He emphasized that this year’s theme, "Building Mental Resilience in a Changing World," resonates deeply, as mental health issues often exacerbate existing inequalities, leaving the most vulnerable especially the youth struggling with drug addiction and other social vices.

The Vice Chancellor further expressed his appreciation to the Department of Family Health Medicine, describing them as a tireless partner in promoting and advocating for health and wellness among the University's staff and the wider community. He further affirmed the University’s dedication to strengthening efforts in health preparedness and response.

In his remarks, Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Abiso commended the University Management and congratulated Professor Mele on his appointment as the substantive Vice Chancellor. He also expressed his Department's honour in commemorating World Family Health Doctors Day with the University.

Dr. Abiso also highlighted the importance of shifting perceptions from unattainable ideals of mental health toward promoting resilience and adaptability. He noted that family doctors often serve as the first point of contact for individuals facing mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and stress. Their long-term relationships with patients, he said, enable them to identify and address such issues proactively, thereby improving overall well-being and resilience.

He concluded his remarks by underscoring the relevance of this year’s theme, emphasizing the pivotal role of family medicine in supporting mental health and building resilience in an ever-changing world.
