The Vice-Chancellor University Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, has commended the remarkable efforts of the University’s ASUU Chairperson, Dr. Abubakar Saidu, for spearheading the renovation of the ASUU Secretariat. The Secretariat has now been furnished with modern facilities comparable to those of any university in Nigeria.

Professor Mele gave the commendation during an inspection visit to the Secretariat on Monday the 22nd September 2025, accompanied by other principal officers of the University.

He further acknowledged the contributions and support of ASUU and other staff unions in creating a conducive working and learning environment for staff and students. He urged them to sustain their good work and continue offering constructive advice to move the University forward. The Vice-Chancellor also assured the ASUU leadership that the administration would look into their other requests for the Secretariat. He wished them success in hosting the forthcoming visit of the National ASUU Chairperson to the University.

In his remarks, the ASUU Chairperson, Dr. Comrade Abubakar Saidu, welcomed the Vice-Chancellor and his team to the Secretariat and conducted them round the newly renovated facilities executed under his leadership.

Dr. Saidu informed the Vice-Chancellor that the Secretariat now provides free internet services to its members. He further appealed to the University administration to support the construction of a lawn tennis and badminton court, as well as a five-a-side football pitch, to enable members to relax, socialize, and enjoy recreational activities after work or during weekends.

The Vice-Chancellor and his team were also taken around to inspect various facilities at the Secretariat, including the gym, NUPENCO office, archives, refreshments centre, and the ASUU hall.
