The Vice-Chancellor University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, represented by the Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Yakubu Muktar, declared open a training workshop on employability skills for career success, specially designed for final-year students. The event was held on Monday, 8th September 2025, at the Muhammadu Buhari International Conference Centre.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that employability skills training is crucial for career success in today’s competitive job market. He noted that employers seek graduates with a combination of skills, knowledge, and personal attributes that enable them to secure jobs and succeed in their chosen fields.
Professor Mele further highlighted that final-year students must acquire the necessary skills to navigate the complexities of the modern workforce. He explained that the workshop was designed to equip students with employability skills and career guidance, ensuring they are not only academically sound but also industry-ready. He added that the programme is a testament to the university’s commitment to providing holistic education that prepares students for life after graduation. The Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to the Director of the Counselling and Human Development Centre for initiating such a noble idea.
The Director of the Counselling and Human Development Centre, Professor Ali Mburza, in his address, described the training as a clear demonstration of the Vice-Chancellor’s commitment and vision towards the growth and future of students. He noted that the workshop, themed "Employability Skills for Final-Year Undergraduate Students for Career Success", was designed to prepare participants for life after graduation.
According to him, the training focused on practical skills such as writing Curriculum Vitae (CVs), cover letters, and application letters for jobs and scholarships, as well as preparing for interviews.
Professor Mburza urged the final-year students to pay close attention during the sessions, practise what they learn, and share the knowledge with colleagues who could not attend. He stressed that the skills acquired through the training could make a significant difference in their career journeys after graduation.
