The University of Maiduguri has marked a significant milestone with the hosting of Microbiology’s first International Conference themed “Microbial Innovation for Global Food Security and Sustainable Development.” The conference which held at the Muhammadu Indimi International Conference Centre early this month was tagged "Kanem-Microbes 2025" drawing participation from within and outside the University attracting scholars, academics, practisioners, students and other stakeholders.
Professor Yakubu Mikhtar, the Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies represented the Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammed Laminu Mele at the occassion and served as the chief host. He commended the Department’s unwavering commitment to fostering a vibrant academic and research culture, noting that its recent activities, including the successful hosting of its 2nd colloquium, underscore a deep-seated culture of intellectual discourse and continuous learning.
Speaking on behalf of Professor Mele, he emphasized the importance of the collaboration with the Nigerian Society for Microbiology (NSM), calling it a clear indicator of the Department’s growing influence and high standing position in the Nigeria’s scientific community. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for academic excercises to thrive, lauding the Department for embracing this challenge with diligence and dedication. Participants and guests were also assured of the university’s secure and welcoming atmosphere.
The Vice Chancellor received commemorative plaques from the Department, as did the two keynote speakers; Professor Auwal Uba, former Vice Chancellor of Bauchi State University (now Sa’adu Zungur University), and Dr. Hauwa Mohammed Sani, Deputy Director at the Institute for Development Research and Training, Ahmadu Bello University.
In his closing rremarks Professor Mele extended heartfelt appreciation to all staff of the Department of Microbiology, with special recognition for the Head of Department, whose exceptional leadership continues to drive growth and development of the Department.
