The University of Maiduguri athletes have continued to make remarkable progress at the ongoing 27th Nigerian University Games (NUGA), holding in Jos, Plateau State.
In the male handball event, the university recorded a hard-fought victory over Justum University, edging them out 16–15 in a thrilling encounter.
The university’s Judo team also made a strong impression, with Promise Ojikpe winning a Gold Medal in the –63 kg category and Hauwa Ishaku clinching a Bronze Medal in the +78 kg heavyweight division.
In basketball, the male team advanced to the quarterfinals after a series of dominant performances in the preliminary rounds.
The tennis team continued the winning momentum as the university defeated Gombe State University in the men’s doubles event to qualify for the quarterfinals scheduled for today. In the men’s singles, university's representatives also triumphed over the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, with Rubi Toba Kefas defeating Caleb Kayo of the Nigerian Army University, Biu, to book a place in the quarterfinals. However, Blessing Onah recorded a mixed result defeating Gombe State University’s representative before losing to Priye Maxwell of the University of Port Harcourt.
The Taekwondo and Judo teams added more medals to the University's tally. The female Poomsae team bagged a bronze medal, while the university secured gold in the 62 kg female category and bronze in the +87 kg male division.
Overall, the University of Maiduguri continues to demonstrate excellence, determination, and team spirit across all events at the 27th NUGA Games.
