The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has inspected the ongoing 12-megawatt (MW) hybrid solar project at the University of Maiduguri. The project, implemented under the Rural Electrification Agency’s (REA) Energising Education Programme (EEP), is a flagship Federal Government initiative aimed at improving power supply to Federal Universities and Teaching Hospitals across the country.
The solar power facility, designed to serve both the University of Maiduguri and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), is already at an advanced stage of completion It has been supplying electricity to both institutions for over a year, significantly reducing energy costs and improving service delivery.
The Minister, accompanied by Commissioners of Information from APC-governed states, led the official tour on Wednesday, 15th October, 2025, as part of the quarterly meeting of the Progressive Governors’ Forum with Information Commissioners.
Speaking during the visit, Mohammed Idris commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting such a multidimensional impact project, describing it as a major step toward achieving sustainable energy in tertiary institutions.
“This is the University of Maiduguri Solar Farm. We’re being told that this project has significantly reduced the university's monthly energy expenses. We thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for making this possible. Beyond saving costs, this facility enhances research, teaching, and patient care at the teaching hospital,” the Minister stated. He therefore also praised the University Management for its commitment to safeguarding and maintaining the facility.
