The Vice-Chancellor of University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, receives a delegation from the Borno State office of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), led by its Assistant Director Jacob John Waba, on a courtesy visit in his office at the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building on Tuesday.
The team, led by Mr. Waba explained that the purpose of the visit was to explore ways to collaborate with the University in areas that could benefit both the institution and the wider community. He highlighted that CAC is responsible for supervising, managing, and regulating the affairs of registered companies, nonprofit organizations, and small businesses in Nigeria.
He noted that Nigeria currently has over 40 million registered entrepreneurs, emphasizing the reality that white-collar jobs may not be available for every graduate. Therefore, CAC is engaging with educational institutions to sensitize and encourage students to secure business certificates while still in school, empowering them to become entrepreneurs.
The Assistant Director added that with the support of the Bank of Industry, small business owners can access capital of up to ₦5 million at a single-digit interest rate, an opportunity CAC believes students should be aware of before graduation.
In his response, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Mele expressed gratitude for the visit and welcomed the CAC’s initiative. He noted that the Commission is not new to the University and that their collaboration has been long-standing. He said he was particularly excited about the entrepreneurship aspect of the proposal.
The Vice-Chancellor further explained that the University already has an Entrepreneurship Centre where students are trained and suggested that the proposed partnership should extend to the University staff as well. He assured the CAC team of the Institution’s full support and commitment to future collaborations aimed at developing students entrepreneurship.
